The word "gospel" simply means good news. And Christianity is all about the good news of Jesus. The reason that it is good news is that first of all there is bad news.
The Bad News
All people are sinners. That means that we have sinned against God, who is holy. That means that he is perfectly pure and that he does not tolerate sin. Sin is anything we do that is outside the the character and will of God. That sin separates us from God. And there is nothing we can do to remove the offense, so that separation will last forever.
The Good News
God didn't want us to be separated from him, however. He wants a relationship with mankind. So, he made a way for that to happen. He sent his son Jesus (who is God) to become one of us so that he could bear the penalty of sin (which is death) for us. He died on a cross as a substitute for us, because he had not sinned. But he did not stay dead. On the third day, he rose from the dead to never die again, conquering death and offering to all who would trust in him access to God the Father.
Jesus took care of your sin problem. And he is the only way that his remedy can be applied to you. You cannot work your way to God. You cannot merit salvation. You cannot do anything on your own. All you have to do is to give yourself and your life to Jesus, trust in him and his work, and he will save you, forgive you, and bring you into a relationship with God and into relationship with all those who have trusted in Jesus.

The 7 Steps of Salvation: Traveling the Romans Road
1. Recognize The Condition of humanity. Romans 3:23: For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.
2. Understand the Consequence of sin. Romans 6:23a: For the wages of sin is death…
3. Know the Comfort that God offers. Romans 5:8, 6:23b: But God proves his own love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us…but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ
4. Make Your Confession. Romans 10:9-11: If you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. One believes with the heart, resulting in righteousness, and one confesses with the mouth, resulting in salvation. For the Scripture says, Everyone who believes on him will not be put to shame.
5. Experience Your Conversion. Romans 10:12-13: Since there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, because the same Lord of all richly blesses all who call on him. For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.
6. Embrace Your Consolation. Romans 8:1-2: Therefore there is now no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus, because the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and death.
7. Join Our Community. Romans 12:1-2: Therefore, brothers and sisters, in view of the mercies of God, I urge you to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God; this is your true worship. Do not be conformed to this age, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may discern what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God.
